Rhino poaching

By the end of 2010, 330 African Rhinos' were shot and killed for their horns in one year in South Africa. Rhino's according to the International Rhino Foundation has been on the earth for more than 50 million years, which makes them one of the oldest inhabitants of earth and an animal worth protecting.

There are five different Rhino species, all of them on the endangered species list. The Black, Javan and Sumataran Rhinos are critically endangered and all efforts are being made to protect the last of these gracious animals.

It is only with the help of initiatives like the Own the Night campaign, supported by Lead SA, that awareness can be created about the extinction of these animals. We would like to thank you, our panel, for you overwhelming response and support for the purchase of not one, but three raffle tickets that were purchased for this cause.

With the R2 million that was raised in total, night vision equipment and weaponry were purchased to help South Africa's Honorary Rangers with the combat against poachers.

Here are some of your responses on the Rhino Poll:

  • "Rhino poaching is now out of control and we should raise as much money as possible against this." "Anything that will help to fight against this inhumane act of poaching"
  • "We need to all work together to save our nature and to fight against people killing our animals just to make money!!!"
  • "It would surely make a huge difference in helping them to save our rhinos. After all if people like you don't help who will? Thank you for helping our rhinos! God Bless all of you for helping them!!"

So once again thank you to all of you who participated in this poll. You truly made a difference. For those of you that would rather support other causes… read on.
